This unique twist on a classic steak dinner is a fun and creative way to impress your guests. The layers of savory steak are sandwiched between fluffy mashed potatoes and topped with a rich mushroom gravy.

Ingredients:

Yield: 6-8 servings
2 lbs of flank steak
1 tablespoon of olive oil
1 teaspoon of salt
1 teaspoon of black pepper
2 lbs of potatoes, peeled and diced
1/2 cup of milk
2 tablespoons of butter
Salt and pepper to taste
1 tablespoon of butter
1/2 cup of diced onions
8 oz of sliced mushrooms
2 tablespoons of flour
2 cups of beef broth
1/2 cup of red wine
Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

Step 1
Preheat your oven to 375°F. Lightly grease a 9-inch springform pan with cooking spray.
Step 2
To prepare the steak, heat up a non-stick pan over high heat. Brush the flank steak with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and black pepper. Cook the steak in the hot pan for about 3-4 minutes per side or until it is browned. Transfer the steak to a cutting board and let it rest for 5 minutes. Slice the steak against the grain into thin strips.
Step 3
While the steak is resting, prepare the mashed potatoes. Boil the potatoes in a large pot of salted water until they are tender. Drain the potatoes and mash them with milk, butter, salt, and pepper until they are smooth and creamy.
Step 4
To assemble the steak cake, place a layer of mashed potatoes in the prepared pan. Top with a layer of sliced steak. Repeat the layers, finishing with a top layer of mashed potatoes.
Step 5
Bake the steak cake for 25-30 minutes or until the mashed potatoes are lightly browned and crispy.
Step 6
While the steak cake is baking, prepare the mushroom gravy. Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Add onions and mushrooms and cook until they are softened, stirring occasionally. Sprinkle the flour over the vegetables and stir to combine. Slowly pour in beef broth and red wine, stirring constantly until the sauce has thickened. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Step 7
Remove the steak cake from the oven and let it cool for 5 minutes. Run a knife around the edge of the springform pan to loosen it, then remove the sides of the pan.
Step 8
Serve the steak cake slices topped with mushroom gravy and enjoy!
